The Iloilo Provincial Government continues to strengthen the protection of marine resources as a fisherman was arrested during a joint seaborne patrol in the municipal waters of Ajuy on Monday night, January 19.
The suspect, a resident of Barangay Bato Biasong, Ajuy, was apprehended near Calabasa Island in Barangay Nasidman while operating an unnamed fishing vessel.
He was caught engaging in round haul seine fishing, locally known as sensuro, a prohibited method under Section 86 of Republic Act 10654 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
The operation was carried out by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force, with support from the Regional Intelligence Unit 6, as part of the provincial government’s sustained efforts to curb illegal fishing and safeguard the livelihood of law-abiding fisherfolk.
Authorities confiscated the fishing boat, fishing paraphernalia, and one tub of anchovies (gurayan) valued at P500. The suspect and seized items were brought to the Bantay Dagat Task Force headquarters for documentation and the filing of appropriate charges.
