A four-day expedition by TOP Team Iloilo, a group of outdoor enthusiasts mostly based in Iloilo City and nearby provinces, has opened new possibilities for eco-tourism after successfully exploring some of the least visited mountain landscapes in the province.
The team traversed the rugged highlands of Maasin toward Janiuay, reaching the summits of Mt. Puting Bato (1,150 meters above sea level) and Mt. Payung-Payungan (1,300 MASL). Along the way, the group also documented several pristine waterfalls and untouched forest ecosystems that remain largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism.
TOP Team Iloilo expressed its gratitude to the Local Government Unit of Maasin, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the 12th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army (12IB PA), for providing the necessary support that made the expedition possible.
Unlike established hiking destinations, the mountains presented a true expedition experience, with trekkers navigating steep ridges, dense forests, deep mud, and sections without established trails. The remoteness of the area has helped preserve its rich biodiversity and natural beauty.
The group also reminded future explorers to observe safety precautions, particularly in areas where the locally known 'bolan-bolan' plant grows. The plant, which is comparable to poison ivy, can cause painful skin irritation, emphasizing the need for proper preparation and respect for the environment.
Beyond the physical challenge, the expedition allowed members to immerse themselves in the lives of upland communities residing within the mountain range. Some villages continue to live without electricity, relying on kerosene lamps and traditional torches to light their homes after sunset—a testament to the resilience and simple way of life that continues to thrive in these remote areas.
The mountain range also extends into the Province of Antique, highlighting the area's ecological and cultural significance across provincial boundaries.
According to TOP Team Iloilo, the expedition marks the beginning of a broader initiative to establish a sustainable trekking route connecting the municipalities of Alimodian, Maasin, Janiuay, Lambunao, and Calinog. The proposed trail aims to promote responsible mountaineering, environmental conservation, and community-based eco-tourism while creating livelihood opportunities for local residents who have long served as stewards of the mountains.
For the group, the expedition was more than a journey to mountain summits—it was an opportunity to discover hidden landscapes, learn from upland communities, and inspire greater appreciation and protection of Iloilo's natural heritage. Through responsible exploration, TOP Team Iloilo hopes these mountains will one day become a model for sustainable adventure tourism in Iloilo and Western Visayas.
