ILOILO PROMOTES 5RS IN MANAGING WASTES

In observance of Zero Waste Month this January, the Iloilo provincial government is promoting the 5Rs of waste management such as reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, and rot to increase awareness of the proper ways of reducing our solid wastes.

The Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro-lgu Iloilo Ipg) led the kickoff of the month-long celebration on January 6, 2025 with the 5Rs Movement and conduct of the province-wide Limpyo Dalanon.

From January 13 to 17, PGENRO will also hold a 5Rs Hinun-anon and Actual SWM Demonstration in the municipalities.

As part of the celebration of the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan 2025, PGENRO will conduct a monitoring and evaluation of the compliance on proper solid waste management from January 20 to 26.

On January 31, there will be a learning exposure and benchmarking of solid waste management technologies and facilities being implemented by the province.

These include the Tapon to Ipon Project in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) which aims to collect clear PET bottles and recycle them through the collection hubs established in several municipalities.

Another is the Balik Alat Program which aims to eliminate single-use plastic by reviving the use of environment-friendly handwoven baskets. In Iloilo, 38 out of the 43 local government units already have existing ordinance regulating the use of single-use plastics.

Another technology practiced by the province is the Trash in a Bottle or an alternative recycling technology for plastic.

Presidential Proclamation No. 760 established January as the National Zero Waste Month.

The provincial government, led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., is implementing a comprehensive solid waste management program to highlight the importance of reducing wastes in achieving a sustainable and progressive province of Iloilo.
