This was the key message from Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul Banias as the Iloilo Provincial Government commenced today the 3-Day Seminar-Workshop on Voter Education Instructional Modules for Araling Panlipunan Teachers.

Held under the Bulig Eskwela sang Probinsya (BESProbins) Program, the workshop brings together more than 100 Araling Panlipunan department heads and educators from across the province for an intensive training designed to strengthen the delivery of voter education in the classroom with a goal to mold an informed and engaged generation of Ilonggo youth who understand the power of their vote.

The 3-day seminar-workshop is focused on the rollout of nine Voter Education Instructional Modules targeted for Grades 10 to 12.

Plenary sessions and break-out workshops will guide teachers in integrating voter education seamlessly into their Araling Panlipunan classes.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Nestor Pingil, Chief Education Supervisor of DepEd’s Curriculum and Teaching Division, pointed out the crucial role of educators in transforming theory into practice.

β€œWe give life to the written curriculum and you are here as the implementing arm of this written curriculum,” said Pingil.

He also emphasized the vital role educators play in shaping students’ civic awareness.

β€œThis is for our learners,” he said. β€œWhat for that we (teach about) society and culture, politics and governance if our learners are not responsible and responsive…Their votes determine the kind of society we will be having. They need to exercise this meaningfully.”

Dr. Banias, speaking on behalf of Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to youth empowerment.

β€œWe reaffirm our commitment to empowering the Ilonggo youth with the knowledge and values necessary to exercise their rights to vote wisely and responsibly.”

The modules were developed by the Iloilo Provincial Government, the University of the Philippines and the DepEd – Schools Division of Iloilo.

The workshop is facilitated by the DepEd Iloilo and the Provincial Education Core Group (EDCORE).

The activity also serves as a call to action for educators, urging them to take on the role of civic mentors.
