Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. vowed to continuously support the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for the development of the Iloilo District Jail in Nanga, Pototan leading towards the rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
The BJMP led by JSSupt Vicente Papelera, assistant regional director for operations and also the Provincial Jail Administrator for Iloilo Province joined the Iloilo provincial government during the regular flag-ceremony on October 21, 2024 to mark the kickoff of the National Correctional Consciousness Week.
Governor Defensor said that while the provincial jail is no longer under the management of the provincial government, his administration will not stop developing the facility as a rehabilitation center which offers reintegration programs for PDLs.
βIt is in our best interest to develop it as a rehabilitation facility and not just as a jail. We want it to be one of the best rehabilitation facilities in the whole country,β the governor said.
Defensor also said he wants the BJMP to be an active participant in the environmental programs of the province such as the Tanum Iloilo for MoRProGRes and MoRProGRes Gardening.
