The Iloilo Provincial Government is taking its anti-drug efforts to the next level by running a narcotics detection training course for 26 K9 dogs and their handlers to wipe out illegal drugs in the province.
The Narcotics Detection Dog and Handlers Course trained 26 dogs acquired by the Iloilo Provincial Police Office and procured by various municipalities.
A total of 26 IPPO personnel also underwent comprehensive instruction in narcotics detection, canine handling, and veterinary care.
The rigorous 180-day specialized training commenced on January 15, 2026 and will culminate on July 6, 2026.
However, four of the 26 dogs were not able to pass the training course.
The training, which adhered to national standards, was conducted by the IPPO-trained K9 handlers, with support from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
The provincial government has allotted P3.8 million to fund the program which marked the first LGU-led K9 training program in the Visayas.
Governor Defensor said these trained dogs will be stationed in major ports and seaports in the province to help intercept the entry of illegal drugs.
βSince we cannot have X-Ray inspection in ports, this is what we are trying to do,β Defensor said.
This initiative aligns with Executive Order No. 111 of Governor Defensor implementing the 4KForMoRProGRes which institutionalizes community action towards peace, order, and national development.
It also complements Provincial Ordinance No. 2024-314 which mandates enhanced security and strict border control measures in ports, coastal barangays, and other potential entry points for illegal drugs. (πΎπππ πππππππ ππππ πͺπππππππ π΄ππ πͺππ ππ/ πΎπ½πΊπΌ π©πΊ π«πππͺπππ ππππππ)
