Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. expressed pride and gratitude for the participation and victory of the province of Iloilo in the recently concluded national commemoration of the 127th Philippine Independence in Manila on June 12, 2025.
“It was a good participation. More than winning, what is important is we have made a huge contribution in improving the national Independence Day celebration,” the governor said during the regular flag ceremony today, June 16.
Iloilo joined other local government units with significant historical events leading to Philippine nationhood during the 2025 Parada ng Kalayaan, and even dominated two major competitions through the vibrant showcase of the province’s rich history and heritage.
Iloilo’s contingent, the Tultugan Festival of Maasin, wowed the spectators and judges with its iconic performance featuring the rhythm and melody of bamboo. Tultugan Festival took home the championship crown in the Festival Performance Competition, beating six other festivals. Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival won second place.
The Cry of Santa Barbara float inspired by the Visayan heroism during the Philippine revolution clinched second place in the Historical Float Design Competition.
No less than First Lady Liza Marcos sent a video message to Governor Defensor to thank Iloilo for putting up a good show and making a huge difference during the Parada ng Kalayaan.
“Kon ginatagaan kita papel kag katungdanan sang gobyerno kapin pa sa national events kag national programs, we do our share. Not only do we do our share, but we give our best. It is clear that Iloilo Province and Iloilo City made a difference in the Independence Day celebration,” Defensor said.
The governor added that the national event was also an opportunity for Iloilo to showcase its tourism program, positioning the province as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination in the country.
The Iloilo Festival Foundations Inc. (IFFI) is planning a victory parade for the contingents from the city and province in honor of their efforts in bringing pride to the Ilonggo community and preserving the deep history and identity of Iloilo. (Capitol news)
