A renewable energy technology company is looking to make Iloilo its manufacturing base in the Philippines after presenting its compact vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) technology to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr.
Representatives of WindIQ paid a courtesy visit to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, where they introduced their compact wind turbine designed to generate clean energy while allowing agricultural activities to continue beneath and around the structure.
The delegation was composed of Atty. Martin Yasay, Engr. Jay Soriano, Vladimir Mata, and American partners Zenock Bishop and Chase Kelly.
Governor Defensor welcomed the technology, saying its vertical-axis design offers promising opportunities for Iloilo, particularly in maximizing land use by combining renewable energy generation with agricultural production.
Unlike conventional horizontal wind turbines that require wide open spaces, vertical-axis wind turbines can capture wind from different directions and have a smaller footprint, making them a potential option for agricultural and commercial applications.
Bishop also shared WindIQ's interest in establishing a manufacturing hub in Iloilo.
"Iloilo is a place we can grow, we can develop. The area is great. In our mind, it's perfect for what we want to do," Bishop said.
Should the plan materialize, the project could generate investments, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Iloilo's position as a center for renewable energy innovation and manufacturing.
Defensor, however, emphasized the need for a detailed proposal before discussions could move forward. He asked WindIQ to submit a "concrete proposal" that the provincial government can present to local government units and the local business sector for further evaluation.
