Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. officially inaugurated the 105-meter haunch bridge in Barangay Alcantara, Lemery which has ended the years of hardship of commuters.
The P8.4 million project, implemented by the Iloilo Provincial Engineer's Office, also covered slope protection, cross drainage system, metal guardrails, and line ditch canal. The bridge was completed in 2024.
Barangay Captain Enrico Perasol Jr. thanked the Iloilo provincial government for providing them with a bridge that improved their mobility and guaranteed their safety during inclement weather.
The area used to be an overflow which limited the commuters’ access to neighboring barangays and the town proper.
"Kadako guid sang nabulig diri sa amon nga mga pumuluyo sang sini nga taytay kay gapamroblema guid kami during rainy season kay gabaha. Kag kadako guid sang kabaraslan sang taga-Alcantara sa kay Gov. Toto Defensor sa paghatag sang sini nga proyekto sa amon barangay," Perasol said.
(This bridge is a huge help to us because we used to struggle during the rainy season due to flooding. The people of Alcantara owe a debt of gratitude to Gov. Toto Defensor for bringing this project to our barangay.)
Barangay Alcantara is a gateway of the province of Iloilo to the province of Capiz. It serves as the boundary of the municipality of Lemery, Iloilo and the municipality of Dumarao, Capiz.
Governor Defensor reassured the community that this is far from the end of provincial support. He committed to delivering vital infrastructure projects to improve the living condition of the people of Lemery.
The inauguration ceremony was supported by Vice Governor Lee Ann Debuque, Mayor Oscar Vilegas Jr., Vice Mayor Lowel Arban, Liga ng mga Barangay President Pedro Suyo Jr., and Sangguniang Bayan Member Nikki Ann Dominique Otero.
