MANAGING TYPE 1 DIABETES AMONG CHILDREN YOUTH

The Diabetes Mellitus Technical Working Group of the Province of Iloilo convened for its third meeting on September 16, 2026 to tackle updates on programs aimed at addressing Type 1 diabetes among children and the youth.

Implemented in partnership with non-government organization Humanity & Inclusion, the Changing Diabetes in Children (CDiC) program targets young Ilonggos up to 25 years old who are suffering from Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, usually appears during childhood or adolescence.

As of 2026, a total of 64 children and adolescents across 26 municipalities were enrolled under the program and subjected to diabetes care and management.

The program involves the provision of insulin, medicines, and medical equipment to the beneficiaries. To ensure proper case management, educational campaign materials were distributed and health stakeholders underwent learning sessions.

Provincial Health Officer 1 Dr. Rodney Labis sought help from the TWG members in strengthening the provincial government’s diabetes prevention and management efforts.

Moreover, the TWG also addressed the growing burden of Type 2 diabetes among residents aged 20 and above. Diabetes Mellitus 2 is a chronic condition characterized by constant high blood sugar.

A total of 7,716 Ilonggos live with Type 2 diabetes, based on the data of the Provincial Health Office. They represent 2.59 percent of the provincial population. Of the recorded patients, 4,367 are female and 3,349 are male.
