The Province of Iloilo is redefining festival celebration as it integrates sustainable waste management practices in the celebration of the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahahan 2026.
In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, under its PH Plastics Circularity Project, the provincial government is incorporating the principles of Circular Economy to ensure a clean and sustainable festival celebration.
A circular economy aims to minimize plastic waste and promote smart product design for longer use.
The Iloilo provincial government together with the Iloilo City Government met with representatives from the UNDP on Wednesday to discuss waste management efforts and communication strategies to reduce the volume of plastic wastes during the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan Opening Salvo on January 10 and the KsK Festival Competition on January 24.
Participating tribes are encouraged to use recyclable and reusable costumes and props. Food vendors are also advised to avoid single-use plastics and opt for biodegradable packaging.
IEC materials will be disseminated to instill public consciousness on sustainable urban waste management.
By incorporating plastic circularity in local governance, Iloilo positions itself as a champion in circular economy when holding festivities.
