ILOILO TRAINS LITERACY MENTORS AS BES BASA POC EXPANDS TO 27 LGUS

The Iloilo Provincial Government, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Iloilo, has launched the first batch of its three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) on BES BASA – Proof of Concept (POC) Localization Program Implementation, Coaching, and Mentoring, strengthening the province's literacy campaign as the program expands to 27 local government unit (LGU) partners this school year.

The training, which kicked off today, brings together Public Schools District Supervisors and school heads from 10 newly enrolled LGUs. A second batch will undergo the same intensive training from July 9 to 11 to ensure wider coverage and prepare more education leaders to implement the province's flagship reading initiative.

The TOT is a key component of the province's strategy to sustain the gains of the BES BASA-POC Localization Program by developing a pool of competent local trainers who will coach and mentor school heads and teachers in delivering evidence-based reading interventions. Through this cascading approach, more learners are expected to receive quality literacy support and build strong foundational reading skills.

"The purpose of the training is to develop them as expansion trainers in the Schools Division of Iloilo. This is very essential to the reading literacy of our children because it will help our school heads and teachers deliver reading instruction more effectively," said Lou Azuelo, principal of the San Dionisio District and one of the trainers.

He said participants are expected to conduct training and orientation sessions in their respective school districts after completing the course, followed by capacity-building activities for Key Stage 1 teachers to strengthen classroom implementation.

Azuelo also expressed DepEd's gratitude to the Provincial Government of Iloilo for its sustained support of literacy initiatives.

"Grateful gid ang DepEd sa Province of Iloilo for this opportunity," he said.

With the BES BASA-POC Localization Program now reaching 27 LGU partners, the province continues to invest in building local capacity to improve reading outcomes and move closer to its goal of ensuring that every Iloilo child acquires essential literacy skills.
