ILOILO STRENGTHENS LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS FOR EDUCATION DEVOLUTION

The Iloilo Provincial Government, in partnership with Synergeia Foundation, recently conducted a one-day workshop to empower Local School Boards (LSBs) as co-managers of basic education under the Proof of Concept (POC) Initiative.

Mayors, schools district superintendents, Sangguniang Bayan members, treasurers, PTA officers, barangay officials, and youth representatives attended the event.

LSBs serve as the main coordinating and policy-support bodies for basic education at the local level.

Provincial Administrator Raul Banias said the activity aims to transform the POC into “proof of success” by showing that empowered LSBs can make a significant difference.

Meanwhile, Board Member Gonzales called it “an infinite game” to continuously improve education quality.

Participants reviewed their learners’ reading performance data and joined workshops to enhance LSB functionality and responsiveness.

Participants affirmed that active involvement of local chief executives results in increased budget support, stronger programs, and greater accountability even at the barangay level.

Facilitators included Synergeia President Milwilda “Nene” Guevara, Iloilo Board Member Jason Gonzales, former Gov. Rafael Coscolluela, former Vigan Mayor Carlo Medina, former Silay Vice Mayor Jay Jalandoni, and project manager Edwin Nacionales.

The workshop is part of the capacity-building efforts under the POC Initiative in preparing stakeholders for the devolution of basic education.
