Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and First Lady Michelle Defensor were installed today as the Hermano and Hermana Mayor for the Feast of Señor Sto. Niño.
The First Lady was ably represented by the Governor's mother, Mrs. Cosette Defensor, during a solemn ceremony that marked the start of the novena for the Feast of Señor Sto. Niño.
The installation took place at the San Jose Parish Placer Iloilo City and was officiated by Parish Priest Fr. Nelson Zerda.
The Governor and his wife took over the roles from former Iloilo City Mayor Joe Espinosa III and Mrs. Gina Sarabia-Espinosa, continuing a tradition of leadership and devotion in the Ilonggo community.
The terms Hermano Mayor and Hermana Mayor are rooted in Spanish which means “older brother and sister.” In the Filipino Catholic tradition, they act as primary lay leaders for a feast or religious activities.
The province and city of Iloilo are celebrating the Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan and the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival on January 24 and 25 which serve as a powerful tribute of culture and faith in honor of Señor Sto. Niño."
