The Province of Iloilo’s Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) Hatchery Program has entered a new phase following a comprehensive review of its operations at the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Concepcion Campus.
In partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), and private sector partner Saravia Blue, represented by Mark Villaruz, the program aims to enhance the stock of kasag (blue swimming crab), a valuable marine resource supporting coastal livelihoods and the local economy.
The review, initiated by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., was conducted to evaluate progress, address operational challenges, and prepare for establishing a new hatchery in Banate.
Governor Defensor emphasized the importance of improving operations at the Concepcion facility as a model for expansion.
The BSC Hatchery Program reflects the provincial government's commitment to sustainable aquaculture, food security, and economic resilience.
Once operational, the new hatchery in Banate is expected to increase stock enhancement activities, benefiting more coastal fisherfolk while conserving natural crab populations.
By scaling up, the program underscores Iloilo’s leadership in science-driven, inclusive aquaculture development that empowers communities while protecting marine resources.
